Mike Mangena has given R 50 000 bail in the case of drugs

Cape Town – football legend Mike Mangena has been granted R50 000 bail after he and three other suspects briefly appeared in the Randfontein Magistrates Court earlier this month.

They were accused of manufacturing drugs in a drug lab located on a property owned by Mangena. The co-accused was denied bail and will remain in custody until the next court comes on February 21.

The football commentator was detained by the police for questioning after a drug lab attack on the property owned by the former striker.

According to reports, the 54-year-old youngster surrendered after a drug lab that produced mandrax was discovered in Randfontein, Johannesburg.

Police spokeswoman Lungelo Dlamini has confirmed that former striker Kaizer Chiefs and Morook Swallows were taken into custody after a police crime investigation led to the raid.

"The multidisciplinary team has observed a period of time until they were pleased to have enough evidence to request a search warrant," police spokeswoman Colonel Brenda Muridili told News24.

"The search warrant was made in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday) and the team found a chemical-filled steel magazine and machinery used to manufacture the mandrake, as well as a truck containing liquid chemicals.

"Forensic science forensics scientists are currently on the spot collecting evidence. The value of the clandestine drug lab will be determined by legal practitioners as soon as they are finished with their analysis," she said.

Muridili said the police initially found three men at headquarters when they arrived, and the men claimed to be dealing with animals.

They said they did not know what was going on at the seashore. The owner was summoned and later arrested.
