Volkswagen Argentina will stop production of the Suran minivan from April, after 12 years. In fact, the machines that make up the factory-installed production line of the German Pacheco brand are already on sale: the platform will be filled with a new Volkswagen Tarek platform, according to the announced company.
"Volkswagen SAM, the group responsible for Group operations in South America, Central America and the Caribbean, announced the arrival of two new SUVs in the region: T-Cross produced in Brazil and Tarek in Argentina, developed from the modular MQB matrix that the Group uses it globally and will compete in the fastest-growing segment in the region, "says a statement issued on the first working day of the year in both countries. It is part of a launch in Mercosur of five new models of "sport utility vehicle" or SUV, commonly known as "4×4".
At the Pacheco factory, adjacent to Ford, today, Volkswagen Argentina produces two models, the Amarok pickup and the Suran pickup. In November 2017, VW's owner for the region, Pablo Di Si, announced a $ 650 million investment to build a new model that was before that time an SUV. Now the model has a name and release date. But at the same time, Suran's production was over.
"The Suran line must be modified (…) Therefore, after 12 years of producing more than 440,000 units of this successful model, the completion of its production is planned in the first quarter of 2019," adds Volkswagen's statement. "In this way, it will be possible to continue the advancement with the work required to apply the new platform, whose productive process allows for greater flexibility for the production of new models."
Amarok will be the only one to leave the Pacheco plant between April this year and the end of 2020. Then they will add the Tarek SUV.
Several years after its launch in the country, Suran began production in Brazil, where it is sold under the Space Fox brand. In the neighboring country she does not expect to interrupt production.
However, in Argentina cars are already on sale: there are about 25 lines of equipment that make up the assembly line "Surán Body" and that Volkswagen managers want to show potential buyers while still in service during the first months of the year.
As far as Tarek is concerned, there are very few things known so far, except for the brand and the value of the investment, which is divided between the new model and a new dyeing plant for the entire production complex. "The implementation of this new platform and the new dyeing plant requires modernization of technology and infrastructure at the Suran and Amarok pick-up industrial plants."
Last year, Volkswagen introduced Tiguan All Space in Brazil, and further releases will be the Brazilian T-Cross in April and Argentine Tarek, even without the official date. However, reliable sources have ensured that the new local VW will be launched by the end of 2020.
