Australia's National Science Agency, CSIRO, is investing $ 35 million in frontier research on space technology and artificial intelligence.
The investment will include the development of advanced Earth imagery from satellites, in addition to state-of-the-art science to support the development of AI technology, and is part of CSIRO's "Future Platforms Science" (FSP) portfolio dedicated to dedicating research to new opportunities emerging for Australia.
The CSIRO says it aims to help reinvent the old and create new industries and to increase the capacity of a new generation of researchers by creating specially created study places in these "future" areas.
Space technology and artificial intelligence join other eight areas of future science, including health and energy.

By 2022, the CSIRO Future Science Platforms program will invest $ 205 million from its launch in 2016, and in this latest Space Technology ad will receive $ 16 million to identify and develop science to change traditional technologies and find new areas for the Australian industry is working in.
Space technology will initially focus on advanced Earth observation technologies and then address challenges such as tracking space objects, using space resources, and developing production and life support systems for missions on the Moon and Mars.
Within the latest fund allocation, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning will receive $ 19 million to target its AI-based solutions for areas such as food security and quality, health and well-being, sustainable energy and resources, resilient environments, and valuable and Australian and regional security.
The main areas of research include platforms to improve the prediction and understanding of complex data platforms to allow for trustworthy inference and risk-based decisions as well as data systems to enable ethical, robust and scalable AIs.
CSIRO Chief Executive Larry Marshall said future CSIRO scientific platforms play an important role in inventing and securing Australia's road to prosperity.
"Our future science platforms aim to transform Australian challenges into opportunities where new science can go through seemingly impossible obstacles to give Austria unprecedented advantages on the world stage," said Dr. Marshall.
"Innovation requires profound collaboration so that our FSPs bring together the world-class expertise of this nation in all areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to deliver real solutions to real-world issues."
"CSIRO is here to tackle Australia's greatest challenges through innovative science and technology – and to do that we need to invest in great thinking and innovative research that will hold us ahead of the curve."
CSIRO's investment in space technology is based on the launch of the space roadmap for Australia for CSIRO and supports the goal of the New Australian Space Agency to triple the size of the domestic space sector to $ 10-12 billion by 2030.
