The warriors release Shaun Johnson, effective immediately

Warriors in New Zealand have agreed to release Shaun Johnson from the rest of his contract immediately after it enters into force.

Johnson, the most important marker in the history of the Warriors club, called for the release after being informed that he was free to negotiate with rival clubs before the club offered him a contract extension for the 2020 season.

"Yesterday (head coach), Stephen Kearney (recruiting manager), Peter Oulu, we met with Shaun and his manager, Peter Brown," said Warriors CEO Cameron George.

"During the meeting, Shaun clearly demonstrated that he did not want to be at the club in 2019.

"Based on what Shaun told us, we will not compromise our culture on and on the ground with people who do not want to represent our club, members and fans as we expect.

"Everything we do is make the club the first and the best for our future, our development and, ultimately, our results.

"While it is disappointing that he has reached this point, we must recognize the contribution that Shaun has made for Vodafone Warriors. We are proud of what he has achieved at the club and want him to be the best for the future."

The young semilocrat Mason Lino has already left Warriors for Newcastle off-season, leaving the club without an obvious replacement for Johnson.
