People who do not sleep in complete darkness are more likely to develop oncology and cardiovascular disease, say Russian scientists, quoted by news agencies. "The link between excessive illumination in most major cities and the risk of developing a variety of diseases – especially cardiovascular and oncological – is becoming clearer," said Somaliologist Alexander Kalinkin, head of the State University Sleep Medicine Center from Moscow.
According to him, light is the main regulator for the production of melatonin hormone. Each cell contains its own clock, it has its own cycle which is regulated by melatonin. "If we stay too bright in the evening or use computer equipment, then cut melatonin production for an hour later and cause sleeping problems," Kalinkin said.
