Stephen Hillenberg, the creator of Sponge Bob Square Pants, died from Nickelodeon.
He suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the studio said. Hillenberg was 57 years old.
"Steve sipped the SpongeBob Square pants" with their unique sense of humor and innocence that gave joy to generations of children around the world, "added Nickelodeon.
The studio first released the animation of blows in 1999.
Hillenberg was born in Oklahoma and was nominated 4 times for Emmy, the biggest US television prize.
Last year, he announced that he was diagnosed with APC, a disease characterized by progressive degeneration of motor neurons.
