CLEVELAND – Coaching Browns is not even ready to cross gender or diplomatic lines.
General Manager John Dorsey, who opened the opportunity to hire a woman to be Cleveland's next coach, said on Sunday that the team had not discussed former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as a candidate to become the 9th coach of the club since 1999.
ESPN, quoting an anonymous league source, reported that the team would like to interview Rice, a childhood Browns burner fan, for coaching work.
However, Dorsey said he is not on the current list of team candidates.
"Former Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, is an excellent leader, possesses the highest possible level and also happens to be a Browns fan," Dorsey said.
"I have all the respect and admiration for everything she has done and was honored to meet her for the first time this season. Our coaching search will be thorough and deliberate, but we are still in the process of compiling the list of candidates and Secretary Rice has not been discussed. "
Earlier this week, Dorsey said he would consider a wide range of candidates.
"I just want the best coach to fix this thing, regardless of age," he said. – She could be a woman. I am serious. Who knows?"
The 64-year-old Rice would be a historic and out-of-home candidate for Browns, who fired last month on Hue Jackson after winning only three matches in seasons of two seasons and was 0-16 in 2017.
There has never been a woman interviewed for a NFL coaching post.
On her Facebook page, Rice confessed her deep love for Browns and said confidently: "I know they will hire an experienced coach to take us to the next level."
"In a more serious note, I hope the NFL will begin to bring women to the coaching profession as position coaches and eventually co-ordinators and coaches," she wrote. "We do not have to play the game to understand and motivate players. But experience matters – and it is time to develop a group of experienced coaches.
"BTW – I'm not ready to coach, but I would like to call a game or two next season if Browns needs ideas! And I will not call for a" defense prevention "as soon as possible.
Rice's last reference is common among Brown's brutal fans who still complain about the decision of coach Marty Schottenheimer to play soft coverage in the AFC championship in 1986 when Denver defender John Elway led the Broncos 98 meters in seconds.
