Drivers may need to relax on the gas pedal on a short stretch of Wilkes Avenue if the locals and the new advisor make their way.
Coun. Kevin Klein (Charleswood-Tuxedo) said on Thursday he would make a motion to the Assiniboia Community Committee next week asking the city administration to conduct a traffic study on Wilkes Avenue Boulevard on Shaftesbury Boulevard to the Perimeter Highway.
The rookie adviser said he hoped Winnipeg would cut the speed limit at a speed of 50 km / h (from 80 km / h) to a Wilkes Avenue radius on Loudoun Street on Liberty Street. Klein said during civic elections last fall, spoke with many people in the department who felt that speed on Wilkes should be reduced.
"It was one of the problems I've heard of everyone as a traffic problem and a real safety concern," he said.
"When everyone in Charleswood and Tuxedo tells me they are afraid to drive Wilkes or receive an email with the subject line saying almost someone killed, something has to be done … There were a series of very close rates but from happiness nobody has lost their lives, as far as I know. "
Resident district Carl Roberts was one of those who cried Klein about the speed limit on that part of Wilkes Avenue during the municipal elections. He has since joined the Charleswood Advisory Group, set up by Klein, after his election in the council.
"Something has to be done to slow down people in this area, as casualties happen every week at Elmhurst (Road) and Wilkes, a matter of time before there's a fatality," Roberts said.
He said he believed the problems were due to complications to the construction plans for the Sterling Lyon Parkway route, and the city must find a way to address them in the long run. Meanwhile, Roberts said that lowering the speed limit will improve the situation.
Although Wilkes Avenue on Shaftesbury Boulevard to the Perimeter Highway is a provincial road (No. 145), Klein said he believes the city should do its job through a study.
Wilkes Avenue is not immune to fatal accidents. In October 2005, Brian Fraser, 45, died after his vehicle collided with a gravel truck between Charleswood Road and the Perimeter Highway. Sandi, his wife for over 24 years, survived the accident.
A medical supervisor of the Winnipeg Fire Prevention Service said that at that time, emergency workers were needed for 20 minutes to remove the first victim from the van using False Life.
"It was a significant impact and the impact was on the driver's door," said Paul Roberts. "It's 90 kilometers per hour in that area, so it's a significant speed."
While his main concern on Wilkes Avenue is the intersection between Loudoun Street and Liberty Street, Klein said there are other issues he hopes the proposed study will analyze. The increase in traffic was caused by the recent development of the IKEA store and store at Kenaston Boulevard and Sterling Lyon Parkway (which becomes Wilkes at Shaftesbury).
"There are no turning roads on Wilkes, so when there is a train, traffic can be sustained and people are trying to get through," he said, noting that the final solution might be Wilkes' twinning to the Perimeter.
"We have to take this step by step. Let's first make the speed limit, then the next step should be the province's involvement."
