A teenage girl and her mother are seriously injured in an assault in a high-rise building in Scarborough on Friday night.

Neighbors called 911 around 6:00. after they heard an attack inside an apartment in the Danforth and McCowan roadside area near Lawrence Avenue East, police say in Toronto.

Emergency crews found a 17-year-old girl with no vital signs and stabbing wounds in the upper body. She was urgently taken to the SickKids hospital in danger, according to paramedics.

"[Officers] put it down and was ready for the EMS, and it seems to have probably helped save his life at the moment, "said Det. Jason Hillier of the 43 division.

The teenager's mother, believed to be 30 years old, was also taken to the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center with a head injury, the police say. She is in serious condition but does not put her life at risk.

"It was a pretty agitated scene because it was active," Hillier said.

Investigators are looking for a 35- to 40-year-old man, around 5 "9", wearing a white jacket and possibly no shoes.

He was last seen when he ran down the area north along the McCowan Road near Trudelle Street.

The police say it is not immediately clear whether the victims and the suspects met each other.
