Only when the Sage Northcutt performance began to fulfill some of its promises, it seems that the UFC raised it and canceled it.
Perhaps there is a better way to put this, promoting the fight opted not to renew it for another season. Not right now, anyway. And the explanation for this is very much to say, if not terribly surprising.
UFC President Dana White told UFC Unfiltered Podcast host, "let (Northcutt)," after concluding contracts for a series of three wins.
"Sage is young and Sage needs something," White said. Let him work in other organizations and see where this baby gets in a few years. Maybe we'll get him back.
At first glance this statement seems a little confusing. Nordcutt has been in the UFC for three years. He has 6-2 in two different weight classes, with his last victory coming impressively impressive TKO over Zak Ottow, which was not quite the walking that Northcutt's early opponents have had.
Also, due to the linear nature of time, it is older than it ever was. So how is the young man and his experience now an entrepreneur, when it was not a problem three years ago, when he was younger and much less experienced?
The answer is easy to see for observers led by this sport. As is often the case, White does not mean exactly what it says here. This is a promoter and must be decoded to reach the true explanation.
To begin with, consider how Northcutt arrived in the UFC. After being featured in the first episode of Dana White's streaming web series "Dana White: Looking for a fight," she was signed to the UFC with a 5-0 record and just over a year as a pro.
He also won an unusually high entry entry contract, earning a published $ 40,000 payout to show yet another $ 40,000 to win only in the second UFC battle. (The man he beat that night, Cody Pfister, made only $ 12,000 for the third promotion battle.)
Things like this have attracted people's attention. So did the man who was almost anxious about Northcutt. Colgate smiled. She had hairy blond hair. He had bronze and muscles. It was as if the UFC had ordered a certain kind of friendly TV fighter from the central casting.
The fact that he was "discovered" at White's own show and then paid much more than most of the newcomers to defeat opponents who seemed to have been strictly chosen for their pure beating only reinforced a certain type of narrative . The UFC wanted Northcutt to be a thing, and in that sense it would not be denied.
So how did we get here three years and eight fights later, at which point Northcutt is considered too young and too inexperienced to continue in the UFC? It's simple, really. The winnings are, we are not talking about the product as much as the price.
And, fairly, the Northcutt price tag has grown. In his last fight, for which official payments were publicly available, a loss of Mickey Gall's deposition to UFC on FOX 22 in 2016, his salary revealed in show money rose from $ 40,000 to $ 60,000. That was before a series of three wins, which probably led to a substantial increase in salaries.
After concluding his contract on a winning note, it is not difficult to imagine that Northcutt requires a significant increase to re-register with UFC. It's also not hard to imagine that the UFC decides that the trip is not worth the ticket.
I've seen this from the UFC. Fighting promotion means you have to convince fans that the fighters on the next book deserve it our money. When those fighters ask for more UFC It is money that calculations begin to change.
This is how you move from being the next big thing to needing more work and more experience. You know, if your price is not reduced.
