The combination of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, a new treatment in Mexico against lung cancer, increases life expectancy in patients with this condition, said Omar Macedo Pérez, medical oncologist at the Tórax Clinic of the National Cancer Institute (INCan).

In Treating Patients with lung cancer Under this clinical protocol, "a sustained benefit can be achieved, which means that the disease has been controlled for years."

In an interview with Notimex, he pointed out that he grew up at Life expectancy of 50% in patients.

He warned that lung cancer is a global health problem caused not only by smoking but also by the chronic exposure to wood smoke and other pollutants. "Throughout the world, it is bound in one 85 percent of smoking, however, in Mexico, the figures are different, we have 55 percent related to smoking and a 45% respond to other causes".

He regretted that in Mexico, nearly 80% of lung cancer is diagnosed in advanced stages, which means that the patient is not a candidate for surgical treatment.

We must offer a treatment that controls the disease, which improves the symptoms and makes patients live longer, "he said.

Currently, he said, we have three strategies to attack lung cancer: the traditional ones, which are chemotherapy; Therapies are empty, where they are used medicines or other substances to identify and combat certain types of cancer cells that cause fewer normal cell lesions and the most recent ones in which chemotherapy is combined with immunotherapy.

The treatment changes according to a test that applies to the patient who is called molecular profile, which consists in detecting very specific mutations such as EGFR, ALK; when a white therapy is detected – Type of treatment in which drugs or other substances are used to identify and combat certain types of cancer cells and cause less destruction to normal cells, that is, a therapy that blocks these mutations.

If the patient does not have these mutations that come to present one in four, the following parameter is called TDL1; orientates us to see what treatment we will do if we give him immunotherapy or we will give him a combination of chemotherapy with immunotherapy.

In order to understand this last treatment, it is important to emphasize that, more than a month ago, James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2018, for discovering cancer therapy by regulating the immune system.

His work was essential to demonstrate the true potential Immunotherapy as a cancer treatment, and a starting point for the development of new clinical trials in patients.

What they have discovered is precisely how they defend themselves against immune cells, and because of its discovery, drugs have been designed called immunotherapy, which attacks these defense mechanisms against cancer. The immune system enters into operation to attack tumor cells. That's exactly what immunotherapy is all about, "Macedo Pérez explained.

In Mexico, immunotherapy is approved for patients with lung cancer. INCan are present 400 new cases of lungs each year, and the appropriate clinical protocols are applied to determine the type of treatment.

Risk factors, said the specialist, in addition to smoking, are chronic exposure to wood smoke, environmental pollution and chronic lung infections, so it is recommended that before a persistent cough lasting four or more weeks, it is mandatory to go with a pulmonologist to study lungs.

Also, if the patient has a persistent cough, he has it chest pain, cough with bloody expectoration, these are symptoms that make you think you have a disease and require assessment by a pulmonologist or internist.
