They present new warnings on cigarette packs

The Undersecretary of Public Health launched a new presentation of the health warnings on cigarette packs, which will enter into force on March 22, and which aims to describe and alert the population about the harmful effects of tobacco use by using images and texts .

The National Health Analysis 2016-2017 showed encouraging results, indicating a decrease in the prevalence of current tobacco consumption from 42.2% to 32.5%, compared with the 2003 study on the population aged 15-65 .

14 years after the ratification of the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, part of this outcome can be attributed to the effective measures of the strategy used, which includes warnings on packaging.

This year there are four new warnings about the effects on pregnancy, lungs, others related to discontinuation of consumption (manual cessation of the cigarette) and a picture of mouth cancer. All will be until March 22, 2020.

Tobacco afflictions

Despite progress in figures in Chile, 54 people die every day because of smoking and 18.3% of all deaths that can be attributed to smoking.

On the other hand, spending on health problems caused by tobacco amounts to more than 1.2 billion pesos each year.

In addition, in our country, tobacco is yearly ill to 60,470 people for COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease); 23,851 people for heart disease; 14,473 people due to stroke; and 8,012 people for cancer.

Tobacco consumption is one of the main risk factors in the development of various types of cancer, also attributable to cardiovascular, respiratory, or oral diseases among many others. Therefore, it is urgent to continue to take all necessary measures to reduce it, "explained Undersecretary of Public Health, Paula Daza.

How have the new warnings been designed?

For the elaboration of the new warnings, focus group research has been used to analyze images and texts of sanitary warnings previously used in Chile and other countries.

The Health Warning contains the Salud Responde 600 360 7777 telephone number where a team of trained professionals provides assistance and counseling to help stop smoking.
