Volkswagen moves to Kvasin to produce the Passat cars

Wolfsburg – Volkswagen moves the production of the Passat family cars to the Škoda Auto factory in Kvasiny, which will be produced with the Škoda Superb and Kodiaq models. In Kvasiny, the Škoda Karoq and Seat Ateca models are currently produced. Their production will be moved to a new Volkswagen plant, which should be located in Eastern Europe. Škoda Auto expressed satisfaction with the continued production of the Superb models in the Czech Republic. For over a year there has been speculation about the possible change of the Superb in Germany's VW production plant. Today's decision by Volkswagen to transfer Passat cars to the Kvasiny plant will ensure the long-term competitiveness of both factories in the Czech Republic, said Škoda Auto Chairman Bernhard Maier, CTK.

He reminded that the next year Kvasiny will begin production of the first Škoda brand with a Superb plug-in hybrid engine. From 2020, Škoda in Mladá Boleslav will produce pure electric vehicles. "Today's decisions thus ensure the long-term competitiveness of both factories in the Czech Republic," Maier said.

Volkswagen's decision to build a new factory in Eastern Europe, according to Maier, offers the opportunity to achieve an urgent increase in production capacity for the Škoda models. To move Karoq's production to a new factory, Maier did not comment.

Volkswagen intends to expand its production capacity in Eastern Europe by another factory since 2022. The location of a multi-brand factory, the car maker has not yet decided, has just said it will be in Eastern Europe. The German press speculated earlier that it would be in Bulgaria or Turkey.

According to car expert EY Petra Knap, short-term changes to Škoda strengthen the Group's position as the Kvasiny plant has confirmed it is capable of producing next to the super-class limousine like the Passat. "At the same time, the good news is that Škoda has become green to create new capabilities in Eastern Europe," he said. In the long term, Škoda will call Knap to challenge the group as part of the electromobile take-off.

Volkswagen has confirmed plans for the production of electric vehicles in the German factories in Cvikov, Hannover and Emden. Now in Emden, now there are passages. The company plans to start production of electric cars in Zwicka next year and in Emden and Hanover in 2022.

"Due to the high level of expertise and qualification levels of our employees, German factories are particularly suited for transformation into electrical machinery factories," said Oliver Blume, general manager of the Volkswagen Group in charge of production. However, the transition to the production of electric cars raises worries about jobs. This production is less demanding than the production of traditional cars.

Passat is among the middle class cars. Volkswagen has been producing since 1973 and is currently on the market for the eighth generation in sedan and estate variants. The family includes the Arteon coupe. Germany's media warn, however, that the sale of the Passat drops. Ten years ago, every fifth VW Passat was sold, now every ten years.

Last year, Škoda delivered 1.2 million cars worldwide. It carries out three production plants in the Czech Republic, producing in China, Russia, Slovakia, Algeria and India, mainly through group partnerships, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, in cooperation with local partners. It employs over 35,000 people and operates in more than 100 markets.

Damage is no longer sufficient in the Czech Republic, and some of its cars are produced in other factories in the concern. In 2014, Škoda produced one million cars, now it is about 1.23 million, and this number should continue to increase significantly over the next few years.
