BMW has revealed details of the new 330e plug-in hybrid version of its popular sedan. The new hybrid sedan includes the latest generation of BMW eDrive technology combining a 4-cylinder internal combustion engine as well as a hybrid propulsion system electrically improved.

In addition to a number of upgrades, BMW has been able to increase the electric drive range of the new BMW 330e Sedan over the predecessor model by 50%. It is now possible to cover up to 37 miles with battery only.

The hybrid plug-in system consists of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with a power output of 135 kW / 184 hp coupled with an electric motor that generates a continuous output of 50 kW / 68 hp and a peak power of 80 kW / 109 hp. In addition, fuel consumption and emissions are reduced by more than 10% compared to its predecessor.

The new 330e includes software that controls the interaction between the electric motor and the combustion engine. Control of the electric propulsion system works to increase efficiency and creates a distinctive form of driving dynamics associated with the BMW brand.

The engine and electric engine produce 185 kW / 252 hp combined with a maximum torque of 310 ft. Lb. As a result, the new BMW 330e Sedan accelerates from zero to 100 km / h in 6.0 seconds.

The maximum speed of the 330e is 143 km / h.

In the "HYBRID" mode, the new 330e is capable of reaching a speed of 69 km / h using only the electric motor – 18 mph faster than the predecessor. In ELECTRIC mode only, speeds up to 87 mph are possible, all producing zero emissions.

BMW XtraBoost

Among the most notable standard features is XtraBoost, which temporarily increases the power of the hybrid plug-in transmission system from 185 kW / 252 hp with an additional increase of up to 30 kW / 41 hp. This is the first time the feature is available.

XtraBoost is a standard feature on 330e. It offers the vehicle a high level of dynamic performance that BMW drivers have been expecting from the brand. To activate the system, the car includes what BMW calls a "driving experience switch" used to activate "SPORT" mode. The XtraBoost electric engine offers temporarily up to 30 kW additional battery power, along with 41 additional horses from the vehicle's electric motor.

BMW claims that this system is more suited to the drive features available on the BMW 3 Series Standard Sedan. The additional XtraBoost makes for a more accelerated acceleration experience than in a conventional vehicle with a comparable output of the engine.

The XtraBoost feature can be used up to the minimum charging state of the high voltage battery.

Also for the first time in a BMW hybrid model, the accelerator pedal curve has been tuned to provide both a maximum acceleration and a specific travel program adapted to the Steptronic 8-speed transmission.

The 330e's electric engine is integrated into the Steptronic 8-speed transmission to save space. Due to the compact design, BMW says the hybrid transmission is only 15 millimeters longer than the corresponding versions for conventional models powered by the new BMW 3 Series.

In order to keep the battery charged and increase efficiency, the hybrid 330e includes regenerative braking, the electric motor taking over the function of a generator when braking. Electricity produced by regenerative braking also serves to power the vehicle's electrical accessories. This means that there is no need for a generator with a belt or alternator with screws on the combustion engine, which increases the efficiency of the whole system.

Bmw engineers designed for the new 330e high-voltage battery to be positioned under the rear seats, while the fuel tank is located above the rear axle. This means that the trunk space is not compromised too much to make room for the battery. Additional space is won by a 40: 20: 40 split-folded backrest.

In addition to the standard version of the car, the BMW 330e also comes in variants of the Advantage, Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport. The car can be equipped with the Adaptive M suspension that adds the Variable Sports Steering and the sport braking system M.

For safety, the 330e includes a number of safety systems, ranging from Driving Assistant Professional, to the parking assistant's guidance and guidance system for the parking assistant, including the reverse assistant.

Optional features for hybrid 330e include an acoustic pedestrian protection function. The system uses sensors to see cars or people in front of the vehicle. If they are too close, a warning notice appears. If the driver does not react in time, the system will activate emergency braking.

When the car is launched in the summer of 2019, BMW said new digital services will be available that make it more attractive and convenient to charge the vehicle's battery while on the road. The navigation system will provide the driver with a list of nearby EV chargers and recommends hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions and cultural institutions nearby.

At the availability of the charging station, it is also possible to check the vehicle display, allowing drivers to reserve a seat in advance even before leaving the vehicle.
