"Ghana must avoid suffering from Ethiopia"

Exclusive: The former striker warned Black Stars against pleasure before the crucial match against Walias in the qualifications for Afcon

Ghana has the potential to turn things into the African Cup of Nations Cup in 2019, but has to avoid selfishness towards Ethiopia, says former captain Kwasi Owusu.

Black Stars ranked third in Group F with three points, four points behind Kenya after two games. Whatever the result of winning the two remaining matches, it could prevent Kwesi Appiah from making a fifth consecutive appearance at the 2006 tournament.

"This is a game that can prove that Ghana still has a team quality or is not so much in the game," Owusu said.

"Since Sierra Leone is no longer part of the qualifiers because of the Fifa ban, the Black Stars must avoid enough because a draw in Addis Ababa will end our dream of making the Afcon final win or repeat the defeat of 5-0 which they recorded against Ethiopia in the first stage in front of their home fans.

"There are a few players in the Ghana team who have yet to taste a top-level competition, so this is a golden opportunity for them to help and secure their qualification, should play with all their heart to save the future to motivate me in many games because I wanted to get something for me to be remembered after retirement.

"We have scored many incredible goals in crucial games, and many young players who know of my skill in the past are visiting me for advice," he added.

By 2013, Owusu, who led Ghana at Afcon 1970, which was held in Sudan, was the country's top goal with 36 goals before Asamoah Gyan had equaled the feat. Kayserispor striker extended his record to 51 goals.
