"At your request, I present your resignation," Justice Minister Jeff Sesion's short letter to US President Donald Trump said.
Session was dismissed by a justice minister after months of unbroken criticism by Trab for his exclusion from the investigation into Russia's alleged involvement in the 2016 US elections.
Sesion's departure was to take place shortly after Tuesday's interim elections, in which the Republicans detained the majority in the Senate, but others lost control of the House of Representatives.
Trab announced the departure of the 71-year Session with Twitter posting.
The former justice minister said in his letter that he resigned at the request of the president. Sesiens Matthew Whitaker will be a temporary minister of justice, Trab said.
