Research: Coffee consumption can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's



However, research does not confirm coffee as an antidote to Alzheimer's.

Reporting from metro.co.uk, if you regularly drink a cup of coffee, you can enjoy more than a caffeine drink. According to a recent study, coffee can help reduce Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

"Coffee seems to have some correlation with a low risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, but we want to investigate why and which compounds are involved and how they can affect age-related cognitive decline," said co- director of the Brain Kremblin Institute in Canada, Dr. Donald Weaver, who led the research.

The research team used three types of coffee beans, namely red steak, roasted steaks and frying decoffeinated dark.

They identified a group of compounds known as "phenylindans", which emerged as a result of roasting processes for coffee beans.

Phenylindans are able to prevent, or more precisely, inhibit the grouping of two protein fragments (beta amyloid and tau) that are common in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's cases.

This is the first time anyone investigated how phenylindan interacts with proteins responsible for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, said Dr. Ross Mancini, a medical chemistry researcher who was also involved in the study.

He explained, the next step is to investigate how beneficial and whether these compounds have the ability to enter the bloodstream or pass through the blood-brain barrier.

However, he admitted that more research was needed before the benefits could be transferred to the therapeutic options.

What this study is doing is taking epidemiological evidence and trying to repair and show that there really are coffee components that are useful for counteracting cognitive decline.
