Solopos.com, JAKARTA – Using data from the Gaia telescope of the European Space Agency (ESA), astronomers have discovered a new, mysterious dwarf galaxy near the Milky Way. This galaxy is called a ghost galaxy because it has hidden in the universe so far, but its low density makes it very difficult to detect.
Called Antlia 2 or simply Ant 2, the mass of the galaxy is estimated to be a third of the Milky Way, but it is very weak and is hidden in an area known to the astronomers as the Avoidance Area (ZOA). The size of the galaxy is also comparable to the Great Magellanic Cloud, one of the two great dwarf galaxies that surround the Milky Way but 10,000 times weaker.
"These are galaxies that can be replaced, huge but weak objects like Ant 1 have never been seen so far, our discovery is only possible due to the quality of Gaia data," said Gabriel Torrealba, lead author of the study at Cambridge University, Suara.com, Wednesday (21.11.2018).
Reporting from IFL Science, Ant 2 is located approximately 130,000 light-years away from the Milky Way and over 13 million times more massive than the Sun. The cause of this dwarf galaxy is very poor because Ant 2 is not filled with normal matter but is dominated by dark matter where the material has not been identified. In addition, Ant 2 has only a few stars.
"We wonder if this galaxy is the only one, or maybe the Milky Way is surrounded by invisible galaxies of its kind," added Matei Walker, one of the astronomers involved in the study.
According to astronomers, compared to other 60 satellite galaxies, Ant 2 is the most eccentric. Although the current theory can not yet explain this mysterious ghost ghost, astronomers continue to study it.
