This year, the conservative Klaipėda S. Šimkus, which was opened on 30 September 1923, grew to 95 years.
It is not just an occasion to celebrate and enjoy the continuation of school traditions, but also to properly remember a person who, almost 100 years ago, tried to destroy the customs that have appeared in Lithuania yet from the Tsarist era and is not close to the same things dictated by the provinces.
S. Shimkus thought otherwise. More than a year and a half after the revolt in Klaipeda, when the country went to Lithuania, the composer started the establishment of the first conservative in Lithuania.
Professor Danutė Petrauskaitė, who studied the perceptions of S. Šimkus's creative and social activities, said that the musician lived in Klaipeda in 1922.
France then ruled the country after the First World War.
The region has not yet been connected with Lithuania, and S. Šimkus has already accumulated funds and staff for the upcoming musical school.
"Vilnius was occupied by the Poles, and Kaunas was busy with some work, while another composer, Juozas Naujalis, and S. Simak needed space, could not fit into a place with J. Naujalis, their characters were too different. " The orchestra, since only foreigners played at the Kaunas orchestra at the time, did not even speak Lithuanian. In addition, J. Naujalis did not prepare orchestras, and S. Šimkui seemed to prepare his own specialists, "D.Petrauskaitė said.
The power of the composer's enthusiasm
Researcher D.Petrauskaitė noticed that S. Šimkus was a very good orator, able to persuade people.
"After all, he collected sacrifices for the people of the United States who were victims of the First World War in the United States. He needed extraordinary abilities to talk about something, he found very good words, and so he got involved in the role he even brought him. he helped a lot Lithuania ", – said D.Petrauskaitė.
These qualities later helped S. Simka to persuade the Lithuanian authorities (the composer was in close touch with President Antanas Smetona) that a Klaipėda conservative was needed.
"At first, he created and thought the conservative would be recognized quickly, but he did not succeed, because Kaunas did not have a music school, then a governmental policy." Higher education, that Lithuania is an agricultural country and let the young people approach the earth. After all, J. Naujalis tried to set up a conservative and Juozas Gruodis, who only succeeded in a long effort in 1933, "said Petrauskaitė.
Intense war for culture
The professor assured that the personality of S. Šimkus led to the fact that, however, he managed to establish a Klaipėda conservative.
"There was a great need for extraordinary enthusiasm, organizational talent and knowledge at the highest levels of government, since S. Šimkus reunited the first Lithuanian symphony orchestra and the school was named after him in his name afterwards, and S. Simkus it really deserves it, "- Prof. D.Petrauskaitė.
After seven years of work in 1930, the Klaipėda Conservatory was closed, and a small private music school remained in its place, unable to claim any high school status.
"When the Germans began to raise their heads here, only then the Lithuanian government was involved in the need to strengthen the Lithuanian culture in the Klaipėda region and then remembered the Conservative, but it was too late," Petrauskaitė said.
He's like a Lithuanian Georgian
S. Shimkus was an interesting personality, high temper, acute, inexhaustible energy. Often there is a good mood, attention is not paid to detail, new jobs are being decided, there are no savings, no new acquaintances, parties are forbidden.
It is said that, by its character, he was very special, especially tiring, misunderstanding with the opinion of others, without compromising.
S. Shimkus believed that in many cases he was right, he was very impulsive, like a volcano.
"And he even kidnapped his future wife from the parish where he lived because he was a relative of the pastor, and his wife was a very sensitive and fragile woman, S.Simkus was very admired and married, and the composer was an extraordinary personality like a Lithuanian Georgian, it was not very lyrical or phlegmatic, "- said D.Petrauskaitė.
The scientist, when writing a book, gathered the memories of the former students, S. Shimkus, remembered that in the first queues they were seated at rehearsals, and the tattoos were taken from his head and he had beaten his hair for hair.
The students did not conceal the fact that S. Simkaus was afraid, but admitted that they were like a father because they came from the villages.
S. Shimkus offered them a bedroom, free food. The young people were very supportive.
Rebellion against orthopedic despot
It was the time when the founder of conservative Klaipėda was even dismissed as a director because of a too dictatorial approach.
"I met my students because I dictated my order at school and I only got involved in the specialty – playing the inhuman orchestra for many hours – from morning till evening. It seemed that even the night had to awaken the students to do other things, but S. Shimkus ordered other teachers not to go, but only to him, "D.Petrauskaitė revealed the thunder about the legendary creators of the conservative.
At that time, students' strikes against Shimkah took place because he did not carry out approved programs according to which they had to study.
Of course, other educators were dissatisfied that the students did not attend their classes, but only the orchestra.
"As a result, there was" insurrection ", threatened with S. Şimkus even to physically face, even the police arrived in the conservatory, scared of further excuses. Then the Ministry of Education suggested to S. Šimkas and Juozas Žilevičius started working as a director, then it was S. Šimkus's right hand, he worked there, he taught theoretical subjects, when S. Šimkus left the orchestra, another person began to lead the orchestra, the orchestra's level began to decline, school poetry began to collapse, "Petrauskaitė said.
Then the same disciples began to write to Sheikh to return. And he returned, began to lead the Conservatory again, and J. Žilevičius went to America for half a year. The two concepts of pedagogy were different.
Music is a hero of the anecdote
Because of his terrible temperament, S. Šimkus could not remain unnoticed by the Satyrs ever since. There was a lot of laughter about this sound of music in interwar magazines. Such an anecdote is printed in Aitvare.
"A beggar stood in front of the hotel" Ryto "in Klaipeda, sculpting a motif of our composer, Šimkus, made up of a violin by violinist Šimkus, which opens suddenly, a red figure appears, the composer himself:" After "Do you not see the head of the sheep instead of Fisc-mol in the major?" The next day, S. Šimkus at Berliner Hof sees the same suppressed musician with a chest on his chest: "The disciple of the composer S. Şimkus "In the citation and in other languages there is no mention of AD).
Aitvaras even discovered the name of a local composer in the "weather forecast for the weather in the weather station" column.
"On Liberty Avenue: clouds of unexplored material and rain in the earth." Aleksote: Fall, the frogs are at the Institute of Physics and Chemistry and are preparing to escape the warm edges. In Rokiškis: the archipelago began to be built, residents promise to go to Šatrijos Hill in Klaipėda: Shtilstam, Shtumzin, Shimkus conservatory of nine dwarves and Shimkus. "
