Return developer Housemarque has unveiled a brand new gameplay of the upcoming PS5 exclusivity and there are already many things to appreciate.
Returnal, a third-person arcade action game, mixes the bullet-hell genre with red-like elements. Play as a lone survivor trapped on an alien planet that must overcome waves of hostile enemies using exotic weapons, crossing techniques and special moves. Due to its dishonest nature, every time you play the game the promises will be different.
The video below offers a fascinating insight into how Housemarque made the transition from side-scrolling shooters to 2D or top-down to 3D. Excerpts from the PS5 gameplay are presented during the interview, which showcases the rhythmic nature of the game and also how equipment such as the “hookshot” helps add a layer of verticality to the experience.
Housemarque also refers to the work done to integrate the new feature set of the PS5 DualSense controller. Adaptive triggers are fully utilized and offer double-button functionality. You can press L2 halfway to perform a traditional focus lens, while if you press the shutter button all the way down, you will shoot differently. Players can also fully customize the controls to suit their personal preferences.
A return to form?
Housemarque is renowned for its intense action games such as the PS4 Resogun launch title and Super Stardust HD on the PS3, so hopes are high that Returnal will also provide a compelling and satisfying experience for gamers.
Fortunately, Returnal is not too far away. It arrives on PS5 on March 19, 2021 and is one of our most anticipated games of the year. It’s also exclusive to the PS5, which is likely to bolster the appeal of Sony’s new hardware to potential buyers, especially if it gets critical acclaim.
