A red ribbon in the neighborhood: Aids-Hilfe Styria makes a trip to the district

Aidshilfe Steiermark operates under the motto "I Want to Know!" through the Weiz district.

In 2017, in Styria, 58 were diagnosed with HIV infection for the first time. This represents a 26% increase from 2016. In order to draw attention to this unpleasant development and to increase awareness of HIV and AIDS, Aidshilfe Styria visits the Weiz district.

High cost of therapy

40 percent of diagnoses are very late. This means that those affected have been carrying the virus for many years, thus damaging their own health and possibly endangering others through negligence. Due to the future development of medical treatment options, today's infected people can lead an almost normal life, but a big problem is that patients infected with HIV or AIDS will be stigmatized in our society, "explains Manfred Rupp, head of Aidshilfe Steiermark. In addition, the average cost of care for a HIV-infected person throughout his life would be between 400,000 and 500,000 euros.

District Tour Weiz

Until the World AIDS Day, which takes place on December 1, Styria Aidshilfe in the Weiz district wants to make the tour "I Want to Know!" to create awareness and to inform people through lectures, free and anonymous tests, poster campaigns and red ribbons on public buildings.
At AIDS, is there anything else for us? will be discussed on November 15 in Paracelsusapotheke Weiz and on November 27 at Kulturkeller Gleisdorf on the subject. Health counselor, Christopher Drexler, stresses that the disease should not be forgotten: "Due to treatment options, HIV infection is now treatable, but we must not eliminate this disease."

Anonymous testing

In Graz you can get an anonymous and free test at Aidshilfe Steiermark. The result of the test is obtained within three to five days. A quick test allows a result after half an hour. 80% of the people tested are currently in Graz and the surrounding area with a tour of the districts they want to facilitate access to an HIV test. I hope the district tour will increase awareness of this important topic and reduce exposure to people affected by the infection, "says Rupp.
