Astronomers have found evidence of the presence of the ozone layer above the polar regions of Venus

Scientists have discovered the ozone layers above Venus's polar regions. An international team of astronomers made a breakthrough while analyzing the archive documents of the Venera Express mission. The study confirms the patterns of movement of the planet's atmosphere. Scientists believe that this discovery will make adjustments to existing criteria for habitats of the exoplanets. That's what Icarus says.

For the first time, the signs of ozone layer on Venus were observed in 2011, but the registration cases were short-lived and the layer itself was very thin and at high altitude. In a new study, scientists reanalyzed data from the SPICAV instrument, which consisted of infrared and ultrasound spectrometers installed on the Venera Express interplanetary mission, collected between 2006 and 2014.

Scientists have been able to detect persistent dense layers of ozone that lie above Venus's polar regions above the 50 ° latitudes at an altitude of about 70 kilometers from the planet's surface in the upper layer where the pressure is similar to the ozone layers in the atmosphere of Mars and the Earth.

According to the researchers, the volumetric ozone fraction on Venus was 10 to 20 particles per billion (0.1-0.5 Dobson units). For comparison, the ozone concentration in Earth's atmosphere is a thousand times higher.

True, scientists do not even hope to add Venus to the list of exoplanets. It is said that not only the presence of the ozone layer but also its concentration affects the viability of the planet. In the solar system, only the Earth fulfills this criterion.
